To answer your question refer to the image below. The agitator should fit onto the coupler, part key 310, with just a tight fit. The coupler is attached to the top of the transmission with a screw, part key 301, which should be tight. The problem can be as simple as a loose screw. You should be able to pull straight up on the agitator and remove it. You can then check if the screw is loose. Worse case would be a transmission shaft problem but that is rare. Over time old detergent can act like glue so pulling the agitator up and off the coupler may be difficult. I hope this helps. You can reply with any additional details for further assistance.
