Question and Answers

Any ideas what an alarm-like sound (10-45 seconds) from our Kenmore heat pump could be?

If you will send another question and tell us whether the noise comes from the outside unit or the inside blower we will research the problem and get you an answer. It would be helpful to know when it makes the noise also. The model number you sent is for the air conditioner unit outside.

If the noise is coming from the outside unit it is probably the reversing valve. If it sounds like freon being pushed through a smaller than usual opening the reversing valve will cause this.

The reversing valve is part of the sealed system on the unit and has an extended warranty of 5-10 years. Check your warranty if the unit is past the first year. The refrigerant has to be reclaimed then put back in the unit in order to replace a reversing valve. This is best done by a licensed technician.

You can take the top off the unit and locate the reversing valve and might tell where the noise is coming from.
