Hi,

Thank you for your question. It is concerning when the refrigerator is not functioning correctly. This holds especially true when the sealed system fails. If the evaporator coil has failed, the repair is pricy but can be done. A repair like this would require the system be properly evacuated and the heat exchanger isolated and back flowed to make sure it is not clogged. There will be parts that need to be cut out and replaced. At the least, the low side assembly would need to be replaced and it has a cost of, WR85X306, LO-SIDE ASM, 210.99. This does not count the Freon, and the repair labor. This total cost will run easily over 500.00 and the unit could get another restriction and fail elsewhere in the system, I say this because, if the system has never been open before, some material inside the tube has scalded off and is floating around inside the system waiting to clog up another part of the tube.

On an refrigerator, that needs a major repair like this and the cost of the repair going over 500.00 and the possibility of this becoming an distrusted refrigerator that you cannot rely on anymore. I would advise you to consider the purchase of a new side by side. It will be more energy efficient, saving you money over the long haul.

I hope this is helpful. If I may be of further assistance please include more details in a reply below this entry.

Hi Bill. Thank you for your detailed response. You are right - failure of the fridge can be very disruptive. Luckily we have another, although a much smaller, unit. I think you are right. Its probably time to get another one since equivalent new ones are not that much more expensive. That makes me think though - how long are modern refrigerators expected to last anyway? 10 years appears to be low. Maybe it was just this model. BTW can this old fridge be sold for parts? Thanks again. Vivek

Sorry for late reply. Sometimes you can sell for parts but I think it is not worth the trouble.

Q:

Refrigerator Water Valve Assembly

A:

This is something that not just anyone knows how to do, I know I don't because me and appliances just don't mix. I have taken some time to find a answer to your question here on Manage My Life and noticed that someone else had asked a similar question with a posted response from an expert. I have attached the link below if you are interested in viewing the page while waiting on your response from an expert. Hope this helps, good luck!

The one piece section of the valve will be where the incoming water line connects and the back side will go to the water filter. The water line out of the filter will in turn go to the inlet on the double valve section. Now the icemaker water line will connect to the smaller inlet on the back side of the valve and the larger connection of the valve connects to the dispenser tube. I hope this will help you. If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .
