Question and Answers

Q:

Ice maker isn't calling for water.

A:

It can be very aggravating when your ice maker fails to produce ice. While you are waiting for your expert answer, I did some research on the unit. At this time, I was unable to locate information that would be helpful in regards to your question. Some of these questions that are asked will need specific research and will be answered by an expert with-in two business days but usually sooner.

Update, the ice maker did start making ice last night. However, only about half of the tray fills with water. So I only get 4 or 5 cubes produced each cycle instead of 8. So I guess I need help on that instead of the original question.

Thank you for your question. This could be one of the following issues.

  • The bail arm is not in the down position.
  • The freezer must be below 15 degrees F for the ice maker to cycle.
  • The water fill tube that enters the freezer may be frozen.  Look for a freeze plug that could be preventing water from entering the ice mold.
  • Fill the ice mold with water. You can use a turkey baster or squirt bottle. After it freezes, it should eject and fill with water from the water system. Sometimes, there may be air in the ice maker fill line. It may not fill or it may partially fill on the first cycle or two. Listen for the buzz of the water solenoid valve when the ice maker cycles. It may be the valve for the ice maker is not energizing.
The image below shows the tube as key #806 and the water valve as key # 800.  If parts replacements or further voltage checks need to be made, a technician can be scheduled at Sears Home Services. If further assistance is needed, please reply.  Thank you for using Manage My Life.

I don't know if you read the update, but the ice maker has started working. Everything seems to be working fine. It fills 5 out of 8 molds, freezes, and harvests the ice into the ice holder. I just don't know why it's not filing all 8 molds. The water pressure in the house is good, including the sink where the line is run to. However, the water pressure of the water in the door is low so I assume the water pressure to the ice maker is low also. Another odd thing is that the water coming out of the door isn't super cold. It's really not even as cold as it is right out of the tap. Any suggestions on those things?

Hi Eric. I am happy to hear the ice maker is working but the low water pressure would be disappointing. If you are using a water filter, I would look at replacing with a new one or making sure the connection is good. The water filter is one item that can affect water flow. The water tube supplying water should also be checked to make sure it is not partially frozen. The water valve may be bad since the water dispenser and ice maker both have low water flow. The water temperature may be affected by a low water level in the water reservoir since it has to refill and cool again. I would check the freezer temperature and if too cold, check the water line for a frozen plug. If that is fine, then the water valve probably needs to be replaced.

Barbara H., Thanks for your help. I believe I'm going to need to purchase the valve. It would make sense that is the issue as the ice maker feed is low pressure and the water in the door pressure is low and they're both separate lines from the valve. I have another question though, I can only get crushed ice. No matter which setting it's on, I only get crushed. Can you let me know what the problem is here or what parts I need?

Hi Eric. Thank you for the reply. I apologize about the delay. I was away for awhile. If you are still having issues with getting crushed ice only, try the following. Pull the ice bin out. Check for and remove any clumped ice or shaved ice in the bin. Empty and dry bin thoroughly. Reinstall ice bin and make sure it is all the way back against back wall. Allow ice maker time to make ice cubes. Select Crushed ice, then cubed ice. Try dispenser again. If the problem continues, the solenoid may need to be replaced. It is part#WR62X107.
