I am sorry and do understand your frustration when the dryer is getting so hot that it burns your mother-in-law's fingers.

Glad to help out.   Im  looking at your model number Estate dryer TEDX640JQ0.

Sorry for the burnt fingers and the dryer overheating so bad.   The inside can get that hot to burn the fingers.  First thing always to do is clean out the lint screen area and then the vent areas going out of the house.   Has to have a good air flow continually.   If you need a brush to do that here is a link below for one to help as a reminder to clean the dryer out.
Behind the blower on the back side of the dryer is a thermostat and a thermal fuse.   I would test both of them out.   Sounds much like you blew the thermostat and when that is blown it often blows the thermal fuse too.   Check both out with a volt meter.  Should have power going in and out.   IF closed circuit great, if bad then needs to be replaced.

Thank You for choosing SearsPartsDirect.com

I can understand the frustration when you dryer is not working like it should. Based on the information you have provided it sounds like you have a faulty thermostat. The thermostat controls how long the heating element stay on, one it reaches the desired temperature it turns the element off.

You will need a volt/ohm meter to check the continuity of each thermostat. If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services

I have included a link to our PartsDirect page where you can purchase the part you need to complete your repair. Just click the blue link below to be taken to the page.
