Question and Answers

Q:

can you help me access the defrost drain tube in a GE frig

A:

It's great that you're determined to fix your refrigerator yourself.  I have taken some time to research your question here on the Manage My Life website and I noticed that someone else had asked a similar question with a posted response from an expert. Have a nice day!

Thank you for submitting your question. I understand your concern and I will be happy to assist you. Water will leak inside the refrigerator when the drain system gets frozen or restricted. In this model it's common for the drain funnel (key# 226), to get an algae build-up and sometimes cause the drain to freeze. The drain funnel is located under the control housing and you will need to pull it out to check it. First, disconnect power to the unit. Now remove the top shelf to make it easier. If it's clogged, it can be washed out. The drain grommet (key# 315) can also be clogged. A good way to clear it is to blow through it. If you prefer not to do this, then you'll need to try and clear it with a screwdriver. With the drain grommet and funnel clear, now check the small drain hole above the funnel to see if it's iced up. If it's clear, then nothing else needs to be done. If it's iced up, the drain will need to be cleaned from the freezer section. The back panel in the freezer will need to be removed. The freezer will need to be cleared out, including the ice maker. With the back panel removed, you'll see the evaporator and directly under it will be the drain pan. Use hot water to clear the drain pan out. This may take several tries unit the drain is completely clear. I hope this helps. Please reply back to this thread if you require further assistance. Thank you for using Manage My Life.

Q:

Where precisely is the drain hole/tube?

A:

The answer you have listed is close but not exactly for your model. The drain location is the same but access to it is different. To remove the rear panel in this model is more difficult. The freezer door has to be removed first (I'm sending you some pictures and instructions). Next you will need to remove the icemaker and side rails. When this is done the back panel will pull out. This is not an easy job. To gain access to the drain, to remove the door and back panel can be difficult even for technicians. Replacing the parts and getting the rails aligned can also be difficult. I would strongly recommend having a technician perform this job. If you need more assistance, you can resubmit your question with more details.

GE frig TBX22PRBSRAA is a top freezer/bottom frig...the ice is draining into the bottom of the frig, then freezing, then running out the front of the door. i've located a drain tube out the back of the middle of the frig, which looks like it is located behind the temperature control panel inside the frig, located directly below the freezer section at the back of the frig. i've unscrewed the hex head screw on the left side of the control panel, removed all the buttons and dials on the panel, and am now unsure what to unlatch to remove the cover to allow access to the drain tube
