Question and Answers

Why is my refrigerator is leaking water from the front kick plate area?

Following are some possibilities of causing a puddle in front of your refrigerator.

  1. There is an air leak in one of the seals causing a frost issue.
  2. The defrost water on your refrigerator drains out the back of the freezer floor into a plastic drain tray underneath the freezer side. If the drain stops up, the water will back up into the freezer and you will have ice on the bottom of the freezer. You can slide the lower basket out of the freezer and look at the drain pan in the rear of your freezer.
  3. Take the grill off the bottom of the refrigerator underneath the doors. Open both doors and pull on the top ends of the grill and it will just roll off. Shine a light underneath the refrigerator and freezer and look for a puddle or a track where water has run.
  4. Remove the lower crisper in the refrigerator side and see if water is standing in the bottom of the refrigerator. If there is, look for where it came from.
  5. Look closely underneath the freezer door for signs left by water running down, also in the area of the front grill for water having dripped down onto the grill. Check the drain pan in the ice dispensing area and see if it is holding water, sometimes ice cubes fall out and melt causing puddles, also sometimes water dispensers don’t turn off completely and leak.
  6. Finally, if you have a pet inside the house, we sometimes find the area in front of the refrigerator is a favorite spot to use the bathroom.
This can be a very hard problem to diagnose, I highly recommend calling a service professional to diagnose and repair your appliance. If you require further assistance please resubmit question with details of the checks you have made. I will be looking forward to helping you again in the near future.
