Q:

How do you remove the housing for the pull cord? 316292650 Craftsman Mini tiller

A:

Thanks for the inquiry and for being a valued member.

In order to remove the rewind housing, you will need to remove the screws holding the clutch cover, and remove the clutch. In order to seize the piston to remove the clutch, you will want to remove the spark plug and insert soft rope into the cylinder to bind the piston. Leave enough rope hanging out to remove it later.

The screws should be a Torx T20 or T25. There will be a screw in the center of the clutch drum that needs to be removed. The drum will pull off, and you can then use a pair of channel locks or an adjustable spanner wrench to remove the clutch. Once the clutch is removed, you can remove the screws holding the rewind housing and pull it off so you can gain access to the rewind assembly for the rope replacement.

In order to remove the rewind starter housing, you will need to remove the clutch. In order to do so, you will need to remove the spark plug and fill the cylinder with soft rope. Leave enough sticking out to be able to pull it out once finished. Once the rope is inserted in the cylinder and the piston is stopped, you can remove the center screw from the clutch drum. It should be a Torx T20 or T25. The clutch can then be removed with a pair of channel locks or adjustable spanner wrench.

Remove the screws from the starter housing, and it will be able to be removed to gain access to the pulley.
