Q:

Can I replace the interior light in my Kenmore Elite microwave?

A:

According to your model the only lights that are designed to be replaced by the consumer is the work surface/cook top lights.

The interior oven cavity should be removed and replaced by a service technician for safety concerns. Microwaves are dangerous to service. Internal capacitors can retain a lethal electrical charge even when the unit is completely unplugged. This is why a technician must replace the internal light bulb on your model.

GE Advantium 120 model SCA1001HSS02 and same oven marketed under Sears Kenmore brand. Refer to http://www.geappliances.com/service_and_support/ with the above model number for parts views to confirm that this is your oven. I was able to replace the interior oven cavity lamp quite easily. This is one of two, 120v - 20w "courtesy lamps" the other being under the oven to light the counter below. This is NOT the 500w, cooking lamp! That is a service-guy project. This replacement requires only a Phillips (cross point) screwdriver and moderate skill. Cautions: exposure to sharp edges of metal parts, breaking the tiny lamp when removing / replacing and electrocution if you don't unplug the oven first. There is no exposure to the Magnatron Tube in this proceedure as the access is from the removal of the vent grille and does not require dismounting or disassembly of the oven. Get the replacement bulb at a hardware or home store (the lamp is a 120v / 20w / G 8 base Halogen or Xenon). You may want to buy two as the under cabinet lamp is the same. Print out the parts views from the GE parts site and look for part 282 and its holder #281 and the metal clip that snugs it to the top of the oven cavity over glass #1527. UNPLUG THE OVEN FROM THE WALL OUTLET. On a stable step stool or platform that gives you eye-level view of the top of the oven remove the two screws that hold the vent grill #1225 and jostle the grille to remove. Just left of center there is a small screw that hold down the tray covering the lamp assembly, remove this screw and GENTLY lift up the front edge of the tray to see the lamp assembly below. The tray DOES NOT need to be removed but watch out for the sharp edge as you reach in and unclip the lamp assembly. Remove the old lamp and replace. DO NOT touch the new lamp with your fingers as oil from your skin will degrade the life of the lamp - use a piece of paper towel to handle the lamp from the package to the final placement. Be gentle.
