Question and Answers

What would cause my microwave to make a strange noise and fail to heat food?

I must assume the food was wrapped in a foil wrapper. The foil in the wrapper most likely caused the High Voltage rectifier to become shorted. It could also have a shorted high voltage capacitor or a shorted magnetron.

Microwave ovens must be diagnosed and serviced by experienced and trained technicians. A microwave can store 15,000 volts even when unplugged for days which can result in personal injury or even be lethal.

I recommend calling a service technician out or take it in for diagnoses and repair.
