Q:

Spring inside the pull cord housing is regularly being ruined/bent.

A:

I am sorry that you are having some difficulties with your chainsaw especially when having to replace the same part over again. I was not able to find any information about a similar problem. I suggest you have your chainsaw repaired at a Sears drop off location. Below is a link in where you can set up service. I hope this helps while you wait for your expert response.

Thank you for your question on the starter problem you are having.

Since you have been having a problem with just replacing the return rope coil spring I would suggest that your install the EPS starter hub kit if you have not already done so.

The starter spring assist system may be causing the problem and replacing that whole kit assembly may solve the problem you are having.

EPS spring and hub kit for model PPB4218 chainsaw .

Please let me know if this helped.

Hadn't considered that since it's only the spring that's giving me the problem but that may help, thank you. Am I missing something basic in pulling the starter cord to be causing damage? Occasionally the flywheel locks momentarily and my pull gets interrupted, causing stress to the spring and bending it inside the housing.

Thank you for the update on the starter recoil. I do not think you are missing anything. If you are getting a momentary lock up when pulling the starter rope are you sure it is not the compression on the motor or is it more solid than that? You should have some normal compression resistance. After you put the complete starter kit in, let me know how it works. Sam A.
