A:

After about 1 hour of heating the outside coils accumulate frost and ice. The heat pump has to reverse the flow of refrigerant and send the warm refrigerant to the outside coils to defrost them. During this defrost cycle cold refrigerant is circulated through the inside coils.

Most heat pumps turn the inside fan motor off during the defrost cycle to prevent circulating cold air in the house.

I recommend you go to http://services.sears.com/shs/category/repair?sid=MMLxexpertxmerch and get a Sears technician to diagnose and repair the heat pump.
