The sound you heard was probably the bake element shorting out.

If you want to repair the range yourself, you should disconnect the power to the range and remove the shelves from the oven. Lift up on the rear of the oven bottom and slide the oven bottom toward the rear of the oven to release it from the front support. Lift the oven bottom out of the oven.

Look and feel on the bake element for any rough areas. When an element shorts it usually causes the exterior of the element to bubble. If you find roughness on the element it needs to be replaced.

Remove the screws holding the element to the rear wall of the oven and slide it into the oven. The wires unplug from the element.

You can order an element from Parts Direct The part number for the bake element is W10276482, and the price is $32.80.

If you are not comfortable doing this repair, go to Home Services and get a Sears technician to repair the range.
