Hello Dan,

I'm sorry to hear that your washer is malfunctioning and I would like to assist you.  There are a few different items that may be actually causing the noise and I suggest checking them prior to replacing the transmission.  I would look closely at the drain pump.  As the motor spins in the opposite direction to agitate than it does for spin, a bit of debris that is lodged within the pump could be causing the noise.  There are other points along the drivetrain that may be causing this too.  If you are already certain that the noise is coming from the base of the transmission, I have attached an image of the clutch assembly and here is a video that demonstrates how to service it.  As always, be sure to unplug the washer prior to servicing it.

Please let me know what you find and if you would like any further assistance.

I also own a Maytag washer model #PAV3240AWW, just yesterday i noticed the same problem. while agitating it is making a loud grinding noise, but when it tis spinning it is quiet. To me it sounds like a bearing, and after looking at the parts list it is difficult to determine what the solution will be. I am curious to hear what results Dan came up with, it seems like the same issue. J. Rosenberg

Hello Jason,

I too am interested to see what Dan finds, I think that the video link that I provided for the disassembly of the clutch assembly will likely lead to the cause. The transmission essentially uses gears and a linkage and a grinding noise would be pretty unlikely to be originating within that assembly. I think that a grinding noise would be far more likely to come from the clutch.

Thank you for your question.

I can understand wanting to have your Maytag washer running correctly.

This problem is related to the suspension and tub support.

With this problem I would suggest that you have a technician do the repair because it will require a special tool for him to remove a component.

The kit that is required is part number 12002357.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .

Thank you for using Manage My Life.
