Thanks for providing that model number.

You indicated that the basket is not spinning even through the motor is running. You did not indicate whether the washer is agitating. I recommend that you check that issue. If the washer does not agitate or spin even though the motor is running in both of those modes then I recommend that you unplug the washer and check the drive belt.

The first image below shows how to remove the front panel on this washer (with the power cord unplugged ). If you remove the front panel and find that the drive belt is broken, you can order a new one from the Sears PartsDirect website. The part number for the belt is 21352320. Replacing that belt should fix your spin problem in this situation.

If the washer agitates properly and/or the drive belt is not broken, then you could have a number of other failures that would prevent the washer from spinning. The second image shows a flow chart that outlines the other possible failures. Diagnosing and repairing failures other than the drive belt requires advanced technical knowledge of this washer. Special tools are usually needed to properly remove and replace components. I recommend that you have a service technician repair the washer if the drive belt is not causing this problem. Here is a link for the Sears Service website in case you need it: Sears Home Services .

We are willing to help you further if you still want to fix the washer yourself. Reply with additional details (whether the washer agitates) if you want additional technical assistance.

A service call can be expensive as you indicated in your details. You may consider replacing the washer if you are not able to fix it yourself. You can view current washer models on the Sears.com website. Here is one example of a current model that is similar to your current one: Kenmore White 400 3.2 cu. ft. Top-Load Washing Machine (2942) .

From the description you give I suspect the brake has failed. This washer has a brake assembly which should prevent the tub from turning (spinning) in agitation.

The 21002010 brake assembly is about $20 dollars but it does requires special tools to replace and I would suggest a technician do this job. If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .

I hope this information is helpful. The brake is not a major problem but it does require a special tool to release the brake spring.
