Thank you for your question.

I am sorry you are having a problem wit the washer. Lets talk about the large pulley in the center first. The pulley should turn in both directions. One way the agitator should move and in the other direction, the basket and the agitator should move. If it was not doing that, I suspect the transmission is the problem. You stated that you tried the pulley again and it will now move in both directions. If this is the case, I recommend reinstalling the belt and checking the operation. If it seems ok at that time, I suspect the transmission had something jammed in one of the gears. If it happens, again you will need to replace the transmission. Usually this type of repair exceeds the value of the washer.

If the pulley turns fine and the washer does the same thing, turn the pump pulley. If it is fine, the problem could be a defective timer, motor, or wiring. To determine you will need to have a volt ohmmeter and be comfortable making live voltage checks. If you would like further assistance, please reply below.

Q:

Why is my Maytag washer not spinning?

A:

On this model of washer I would suspect that the thrust bearing or pivot spring is having problems. The thrust bearing, item # 24 is what disengages the brake in the spin mode. The pivot spring, item #1 is what allows tension for the drive belt. I would recommend checking the pivot spring, belt & thrust bearing.
