Question and Answers

Q:

What is the purpose of the rollout switch, on a Kenmore gas pack?

A:

This is a safety switch. If the flame is not normal or if there is a back draft blowing the flame outward, this switch will open and shut the flame off. It will help prevent damage to the controls and wires from a flame that is rolling out and can also help prevent a fire. Some rollout switches will reset and others have to be reset manually. It's better to have to reset it manually because it signifies there is a problem that needs to be addressed. If this switch is tripping, I strongly recommend having a technician check this furnace.

Q:

What could be the problem with my furnace?

A:

Per the previous answer: The only way to determine if the gas valve is supplying enough gas is, to check the gas pressure in and out of the valve. If this is natural gas, it should have 4" WC coming into the valve and 3.5" WC out of it. If this is LP, it should have 11" WC in and 10" WC out. There is usually an inlet and outlet tap on the gas valve to make this check. I recommend having a technician check this furnace and make the necessary repair.
