Thank you for your question and I understand your concern.

Based your symptom and details, the motor is likely overheating and shutting off on the thermal overload inside the motor if the washer has to sit for some length of time before it will operate again.

If the lid switch opens due to lid not closing properly, it will shut during agitation and spin.

The motor could be over heating due to excessive friction during agitation or during spin and drain.  It could also be over heating due to low voltage or a bad motor. If the washer is plugged into an extension cord for any reasons, this could also cause low voltage and the motor to overheat.

The washer could have bad bearings, brake not releasing properly, worn thrust bearing or a bad motor or gearcase. I strongly suggest calling a service technician with the experience and knowledge to properly diagnose and repair your washer.

You can have a service technician diagnose and repair this failure, you can schedule service through this link: Sears Home Services.

To resolve this problem you will need to remove the agitator from the transmission shaft. There will be a bolt hold the agitator to the transmission shaft.

With the agitator removed you should see the transmission shaft moving back and forth. If not the make sure the belt is not broken.

Most likely if the unit will spin but will not agitate then most likely the transmission is bad.

I hope this helps. You can reply with any additional details or questions for further assistance.
