I know how frustrating it can become when you experience this issue with your washer. I am happy to help. Generally, when a washer does not drain you will first need to check the drain hoses and pump for any restrictions. If the hoses look clear then it will be recommended to follow the testing within the images below. The first image refers to the diagnostic test that needs to be performed in order to receive an error code. The second and third image are instructions for checking the voltage on your control board. Once you receive an error code please reply back to this thread and I will be happy to assist you further.

If you do not feel comfortable making these types of checks, I highly recommend scheduling for service. If you decide to do this use this link: Sears Home Services .

Thank you for using Manage My Life.

Q:

maytag washer will not spin, just makes humming noise

A:

Check to see if the washer will agitate. Your details imply that the washer is draining. If it will not agitate or drain even though the motor is running (humming) and the washer drains okay, then you likely have a broken motor coupler in the washer. The motor coupler is shown in the bottom of the second image below. I provided the procedure for accessing this part. If you suspect that this is the problem with your washer, you can use the procedure shown below to access the motor coupler and check it. If it is broken, you can order a new motor coupler from the Sears PartsDirect website. The part number for the motor coupler is 285852A. Replace the motor coupler and reassemble the washer to fix this type of problem.

If the washer agitates and drains but will not spin, you could have a problem with the transmission, clutch, the basket drive, timer or the drive block. If you need more help, resubmit your question with additional details and the full model number of your Maytag Centennial washer.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .

Lyle, I have a similar situation to the above. My Maytag Centennial Washer type 849-05 model MVWC500VW0 will not spin. Seems to only make a humming noise although it has more "feel" to it - like its trying to spin. I am wondering why Im having a problem with this machine because I purchased the machine new in Nov 08.
