If the coupler is broken then generally the washer will not agitate or spin.

One thing to do would be to remove the cabinet and run the machine and see if you can see what is going on.

The procedure for removing the agitator in this type of washer is shown in the image below. The plastic cap will just pull up and out of the agitator. Media such as fabric softener or detergent residue could be causing the cap to stick. You may need to pull it out using pliers or channel locks.
