Thanks for the information about your dryer model medc500vw0; sorry you are having a problem, I will be glad to assist you. Based on your explanation of the occurrences, I believe there could be more than one component that should be replaced.   The cause of the overheating when the dryer was operating and the now no heat could be related to the heating element or the thermostat usually the high limit thermostat. _Always disconnect power supply before servicing the appliance and when testing live voltage be sure to wear proper safety equipment (gloves and eye protection) also be aware of sharp metals on product_ If the heating element was grounded it would stay on all the time even when it should be off cycle.  I recommend that you inspect the heating element visually, pull it out of housing and see if the coils are broken and grounded, if it is replace it. I would also recommend replacing the high limit thermostat, thermal cut off and cycling thermostat. I will attach a wiring diagram for your convenience. All the components listed are located on the back side of the dryer, remove access panel to view and test or replace. If you get to the point where you need to have a service technician diagnose and repair this failure, you can schedule service through this link: Sears Home Services. Ron H.
