From the description you give I suspect the most likely cause of this problem is a bad thermal fuse. The thermal fuse is located behind the back panel. Remember to unplug the dryer first. The thermal fuse can be checked for continuity if a meter is available. The thermal fuse is available from the following link: Thermal Fuse for Maytag Dryer model MED5870TWO .
