Should the machine be a 'Kenmore' the model number will commence with three digits followed by a period eg 417. or 110. or 796.

IT is a Maytag "performa" -- its matching Dryer shows a model # MDG3500BWW but we cannot see one on the inside of the washer the way it is easy to see on the matching dryer.

Hi Stephanie,

Thank you for submitting a question to Manage My Life.

Without your model number I am only able to give you general information. The first thing I recommend is checking the drive belt. This is commonly caused by a loose or broken drive belt, failed transmission assembly, binding tub seal, partial engagement of brake assembly, or a sheared motor pulley roll pin. I am including a set of images below that will demonstrate gaining access to the belt on this type washer. Always unplug or de-energize electrical equipment before removing covers or attempting service. Be careful and wear appropriate hand protection when working around sharp metal parts. I intend for this to be a rough guide only. These pictures may not look exactly like your washer.

If this is not an issue with a loose belt, I highly recommend having a trained service technician evaluate this problem. This is an extremely complex repair that is made easier with specialty tools. If you feel you would like to perform this repair yourself, reply to this post and I will provide the instructions.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .

Here is a link that you may use to view the parts list diagram or for parts purchases; Sears Parts Direct .

I hope this is helpful. Check the things have covered here, and if I may be of further assistance, include more details and a model number in a reply to this post.

Hi Nicole,

Thank you for submitting a question to Manage My Life. I know how frustrating it can be when appliances do not function properly.

From your description your belt may be stretched and in need of replacement. You will also need to check around the bulkheads for rubbed areas, turn the rollers and see if they are squeaky or stiff. Finding the source of noise in hard without being there to see the dryer, I highly recommend having a trained service technician evaluate this problem. You can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .
