Q:

Why does my Maytag dishwasher model MDB6650AWB fill with water after the drain off cycle?

A:

The heater element should not have anything to do with this problem. You could have a bad inlet water valve, a faulty control board or you could have water siphoning back into the tub through the drain hose.

Here are some troubleshooting steps for this problem:

  • You did not mention whether the fill valve is energizing after the cycle completes the final drain. If the valve energizes to fill the tub, you have a bad control board.
  • If the valve is not energizing, then try shutting off the water supply valve to the dishwasher after the final drain. If the tub is filling up with water, then the water is siphoning back in from the drain line. Check your drain line for proper installation. A restriction or clog could also cause this problem.
  • If the tub does not fill back up with the water supply valve shut, then you still have a problem with the fill valve. Prop up the float switch to make sure that the fill valve is not getting voltage. Turn the water supply to the dishwasher back on. If the tub fills with water, then the inlet valve is leaking even though it was replaced. It will need to be replaced again.

If you need more help with this problem, resubmit your question with additional details.

Q:

Why does my Maytag dishwasher fill the tub with water after draining?

A:

You may have a failure in the inlet water valve (see Key 1 in the image) or the control board. Drain the water out of the tub and then open the door to disconnect electrical power to the control board. The door switch will prevent the control board from getting electrical power. If the dishwasher fills up through the inlet water valve and air/water inlet assembly with power disconnected to the control board, then your likely failure is in the inlet water valve.

Try turning off the water supply cut-off valve to the dishwasher. Drain the water in the tub. If the tub does not fill back up with the water supply turned off, then you have verified that the inlet water valve is leaking. Replacing this valve should correct your problem.
