Question and Answers

Q:

how do I diagnose a dishwasher control board problem

A:

I understand how frustrating it can be when the control board on your dishwasher is not working properly because it is what controls the whole unit. While you are waiting for an expert to respond, I have attached some helpful links below that may provide information to assist you with your question. Have a great day!

Try to reset the control by shutting off the house circuit breaker for the dishwasher. Leave the power off for 5 minutes. See if the control works properly after restoring electrical power.

Your details seem to indicate that you have the tech sheet for that dishwasher. A portion of that document is shown in the image below. The key dance that you are describing should start the manual function test that is shown in the image. Be sure that you are firmly pressing down on those buttons. The entire key dance should be completed within 8 seconds. If the control will not enter that test, you can try to enter the Field Service Test shown below.

If you cannot enter either of those tests, then you can shut off the house circuit breaker for the dishwasher and test that membrane keypad as shown in that image. You may have a bad button on that keypad.

If the buttons are okay, then you will probably need to replace that control board since it is not operating properly.

You can order parts from this page: Maytag Dishwasher MDB4651AWW3 Parts . Be sure that you shut off the house circuit breaker for the dishwasher before accessing and replacing internal components.

If you need more help, reply with additional details based on the tests provided.

If you get to the point where you need to have a service technician diagnose and repair this failure, you can schedule service through this link: Sears Home Services .

There are only the control board and membrane panel that might cause this problem. It might even be a bad harness connection. This will be a difficult and tricky problem to pin down.

Unless you have a meter and are comfortable using it then this is a problem best left to a technician.

The control is new and showed no improvement which means the control board is likely the problem. The W10218834 control board is another $100 dollars so some checks should be done before ordering the control.

The 1st image below contains the circuits for the membrane. If you have a meter you can check the switch when the button is pressed. Remember to turn the power to the dishwasher off first.

Before you try checking the membrane switch circuit try running a diagnostic test as shown in the 2nd image.

This would be a good start. Try the checks and reply with any additional details or questions for further assistance.
