Based on your symptoms, it sounds like you either have excessive frost caused by leaving the door open or you have an automatic defrost system problem. If you see excessive frost on the back wall of the freezer, this is likely preventing your refrigerator from cooling. Make sure that you are not blocking the supply and return vents from the refrigerator. Try this:

  • Safely store all of the food that was in the refrigerator and freezer in a cooler or another refrigerator.
  • Unplug the refrigerator.
  • Open the doors for the refrigerator and freezer.
  • Allow the unit to manually defrost for 24 hours.
  • Plug the unit back in and see if the refrigerator and freezer cool properly.
If the unit cools properly, you can reload the food and see if it continues to maintain the proper temperature. If the frost returns in the freezer and the cooling deteriorates in the refrigerator, then you could have a bad defrost bi-metal thermostat, a failed defrost heater, a bad control or a wiring failure between components. A service technician will normally need to diagnose and repair this type of problem. Here is a link for the Sears Service website: Sears Home Services .

If you need more specific help with your refrigerator, resubmit your question with additional details and the full model number of your unit. The model number is usually on the top of the inside right wall of the refrigerator section.

Hello Steve. If you suspect that you have a defrost system problem with your GE refrigerator then the strategy described above may help you. I added a video that shows some more information and troubleshooting for the defrost system in a refrigerator. I also provided an image show shows how to enter the diagnostic mode on that type of refrigerator. Your model may be different than the one shown below. Be careful when using that diagnostic test mode. You will need to read and follow that document carefully when testing the defrost system. I believe that you will need to re-enter that diagnostic test mode to turn the defrost heater back off after testing it in the diagnostic mode. If you need more help, reply with additional details and the full model number of your GE refrigerator (there are several different models that begin with GSL25I).

Hello Steve. Thanks for adding that model number. That model does not have the same controls as I described above. There is not a procedure for forcing the defrost on the model that you have. You may need to have a technician diagnose and repair the refrigerator if you suspect that you have a defrost system problem. The technician will normally have to use some jumper wires to energize that defrost circuit on your model. If you have a volt/ohm meter, you can unplug the refrigerator and check the resistance of the defrost heater if necessary. The wiring diagram for your model is shown in the image below. Let us know if you need more help.

Q:

I have a Maytag Refrigerator Bottom Freezer model MBB2256GES. Can you tell me how to replace right freezer slide?

A:

Before you start turn the refrigerator controls off.

To remove the freezer drawer pull the drawer fully open. Lift the plastic trays (if you have them) out and put them aside. Lift the wire storage basket up and out of the freezer basket. Lift the front of the storage drawer and pull it forward and out of the freezer. On the right hand slide just in front of the plastic latch that is broken there is a release tab. Push in on the tab and slide the right hand rail out the front. The replacement will slide in and latch with the tab.

Q:

Where is the drawer slide release mechanism located on the Maytag bottom freezer?

A:

The rail is removed by inserting a small blade screwdriver in hole, depress retainer, and slide the rail assembly forward. See the image below for further instructions.
