I'm looking at your model number MAV5758EWW and from your description I would suspect that the mixing valve item 19 may be failing. Thank you for your question.  I am sorry you are having a problem with your Maytag MAV5758eww washer

Caution:  Before attempting any repair, unplug the washer first. 

The control is certainly a likely suspect but control boards tend to be expensive and difficult to return is not needed. 

The image below contains the instructions to enter a Service Mode and bring up any error codes.  When something doesn't work the washer should display an error code indicating what is wrong.  Try this and see if any codes are displayred.

If you can select all cycles and options then the touchpads are likely okay so not being able to enter the test would point to a control board problem. It can be tricky trying to enter the test so trying it a few times is not a waste of effort. Control board tend to be expensive and difficult to return. I would think your best option would be to have a technician come to your hose to check this problem.

I went with the 9 to 1 odds searspartsdirect.com gave me and ordered the $120 control board (ground shipping only took two days :) I spent only 15 minutes swapping the board out last night and hallelujah, we could wash clothes again!
