The U shape piece is a air trap to prevent water from siphoning out during wash.

A:

Will water come out of the nipple on the top of the U-shape piece when the dishwasher is draining? Or is this a one-way valve? There's a black hose attached to the nipple but no place to attach the other end of the hose.
