Question and Answers

Do I need new belts if my Maytag model LAT9306AAM washer started smoking (burnning rubber) today?

Replacing the belts might help but there is one or two things to consider first.

One key to resolving this problem is knowing when the problem occurred. If the smell happens in agitation then the transmission might be the problem.

If it happens in spin, more likely, then the brake or spin bearing might be the problem.

You say you have removed the front panel and the first thing to check is the motor. The motor sits on platform that should move/slide back and forth. This maintains proper tension on the belt and it may be this is the cause of your troubles. Lint and dust can cause the slides not to slide easily and this will create more tension on the belt. There is a 205000 glide and spring kit to fix this. This is the most likely cause of the problem.

The pump is belt driven and if something jammed the pump then the belt might burn.
