Q:

Why won't my Maytag model LAT9804AAE washer agitate but will drain and spin?

A:

The washer will not agitate but the motor does run through the complete cycle. It will spin but it won't agitate at all.

If the washer will spin then the motor and lid switch are most likely okay. If the motor is running but the washer is not agitating then the most likely problem is a bad transmission.

If the motor is turning in agitation and the belt is turning the large drive pulley but there is no agitation then most likely the transmission is bad and needs to be replaced.

One other possibility is the agitator is not attached to the drive shaft. The image below contains a picture of your agitator and the part key 18, a fuzzy 18, is a screw that attaches the agitator to the drive shaft. If the screw has come out then with the weight of the clothes the motor might be turning the transmission drive shaft but not turning the agitator. Replace the screw and the washer should agitate.

Check that the screw is in place and tight.

If the screw is not missing and is tight and the belt is turning the drive pulley then the transmission needs to be replaced.

The belts and drive pulley are located on the bottom of the washer and if the washer is tilted up a few inches the drive pulley and belts can be checked. If the washer will spin then the belt and pulley should be okay.

The problem will be major, bad transmission, or it might be a missing agitator screw that would be easy to repair.

I hope this information helps to resolve this problem your having with your washer. If other questions come up then submit another question with any additional details for further assistance.
