Hi,

Thank you for your question. It is concerning when your appliance is not functioning correctly.

When the motor turns, the transmission locks into place the pulley turns the internal shaft driving the agitator, in spin the motor will reverse and the whole transmission will turn allowing the basket to spin.   If the transmission outside case is not turning the internal shaft is faulty.

Please feel free to let me know if you need further assistance. We are always here to help.

Thank you for using ManageMyLife.com.

Bill I'm not sure if you said anything. Are you familiar with a Mayteg model LA506? I have the tub completely removed from the washer, the top of the transmission is removed, and the transmission open. I removed the transmission fluid and there seems to be nothing wrong inside the transmission. Looking down inside of the transmission from above, I can put a screwdriver into the gear meshing with the plastic pinion gear and I'm able to rotate it back and forth freely from stop to stop and the agitator would agitate if it were attached. When I place the transmission against the most CCW stop and rotate the bottom pulley, proper transmission action happens and agitation occurs but then moving the pulley back in the other direction, I feel a spring like force against my turning of the pulley, but nothing happens inside of the transmission. After letting go of the pulley, it will return back to the previous stop. What would be the most likely problem? Could it be something with the brake and clutch assembly between the bottom pulley and the transmission?

I am familiar with the transmissions and if it is dissassembled then I need to tell you lots of the parts are not available any more and We only replace the transmissions since about 20 years ago. Is it orbital or flat? The LA 506 could have either tramsmission.

It's the flat transmission. but I'm rather sure there is nothing wrong with the transmission. What goes wrong with clutch/brake assembly? Why would that function in one direction but not the other?

First I said here is how the transmission work and you did not read it . So here it is once more. When you turn the pulley aginst what you call spring tension it should release the complete transmission the the complet assemble will turn. There are price adjustments for the brake release. But here is what you said : I have the tub completely removed from the washer, the top of the transmission is removed, and the transmission open. It will not work like that and the transmission that is apart is NOT available. So I hope it is not damaged. I will send you the instruction to adj the brake after everything is put back togather. Then you can start adjusting the brake and if you have problems Let me know but DO NOT remove or do other adjustments without getting guidance first. It will go a lot faster and easier. Please keep me posted on your progress.
