Q:

What can cause a Sony projection TV to keep shutting off after startup?

A:

I wouldn't suspect a component in the power supply section because you seem to get past enough protection circuits to get the TV on and audio for at least a few seconds. I could not find a common cap that causes this but a visual inspection for anything domed at the top and a new solder job to the boards might do the trick. I would be curious to know if you hear HV coming up, if the tubes are lit, if 200v is reaching the CRT boards and if screen voltage is present. It might all be there but video is being muted. If G2 is not present then the G2 mute circuit on the CRT board might be acting up. If the TV shuts down with a 5 blink error code then the screen control might need to be edged up a bit. I would recommend having a technician look at the set for his experience and ability to eliminate circuits as suspect based on what he finds. I also don't like recommending consumers to poke around their TV due to the HV that stays charged even when unplugged.

We are having the same experience with our set. We scheduled an appointment with the Blue crew on or before May 17. In the meantime we are reluctant to turn the set off. Our set also shuts down and exhibits the 5 blink error code. I am curious as to how much the repair is going to cost. We enjoy this set a lot and would prefer to keep it. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Sincerely,David S.

The nine blink error is a common issue on this model. To repair the TV two diodes on the power supply board would need to be replaced. D6301 part number 650056721 and D6116 part number 871907443.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services.

Please Note: working on electronic can result in electric shock.
