Question and Answers

Q:

Microwave Handle needs to be replaced

A:

Good morning... I can fully understand your concern regarding this simple issue of replacing a handle, but I would offer caution if you're thinking of attempting repairs yourself. Microwaves contain high voltage internal components that can retain a lethal electrical charge even when the microwave is unplugged. Also, any door work would require a radiation shield test to ensure no leakage into the kitchen. I will forward your question to an expert who will investigate the matter further and get back to you. You will hear from them within two business days if not sooner. Until you hear from us, have a nice day.

The door diagram on the Sears Parts Direct.com site shows only one screw, coming from behind on the inside of the microwave door near your KHMS147kss-1 unit's handle. That's a 5 dollar something screw. So. It might be specially made just for securing the handle onto the microwave door. You may also need a Torx type of screwdriver to turn the screw. A new handle can also be ordered from the Sears Parts Direct.com site, if needed. Good luck.

I understand wanting to replace the handle on the microwave yourself. This type of repair will need to be completed by a service technician since it involves the disassembly of the door (a major shielding component in the microwave). Microwaves contain high-voltage components that can retain a lethal electrical charge of up to 2200 VAC -- even when the microwave is unplugged. Repairs and adjustments, even minor ones such as replacing a door handle, can cause microwave leakage. A microwave shielding leakage test MUST be performed after any microwave service.

It is for these safety reasons that we are unable to guide you in microwave repairs and instead recommend scheduling service with a qualified service technician. You can schedule service online with Sears Home Services or by calling 1-800-4-MY-HOME.

We thank you for your understanding in this matter and hope we can help you with other questions and repairs in the future. Thank you for using ManageMyLife.com.

Open the microwave door & use a putty knife to carefully pry out the door choke in order to access the door handle screws. Be sure to have the door seal checked with an RF meter after the repairs. If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician.

To schedule a service visit www.SearsHomeServices.com and click on REPAIR to begin.
