Q:

I Have a Kitchenaid gas cooktop and one of the knobes will not turn

A:

I understand how important it is for all of the knobs on your range to be working properly just in case you want to use all of the top burners to cook a big meal and I hope to be of some help. while you are waiting for an expert answer, I recommend you resubmit your question and include the model number of your range so that the expert will provide you with a more detailed answer. I did manage to find a link that will provide you with more information about you problem: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080801205323AA64RSc. I hope my link is useful.

Thank you for your question.

I can see why you would like to know what is wrong with you gas valve on your cooktop. It would nice to have all the burners working.

Without the model number I can only give you a general answer.

  • If when you try to turn the knob and it will not turn usually indicates that the gas spud valve is seized. It may have gotten some moisture or water down the shaft and has caused it to lock up.

  • On most of these gas valves you will have to push in or down on the knob before you can turn. If this is not happening the valve will have to be replaced.

  • One thing you could try is to exchange knobs to see if that will make the valve work. Sometimes a knob can get over heated and melt and will not let you push in on the valve so you can turn it.

If you can give me the model number for the cooktop I will be glad to help you further.

Thank you for using Manage My Life.

Actually the knob does turn, but it doesn't always click off, or turn off the burner. It actually turns around and around instead of stopping and shutting it off. The KitchenAid model number is KECC051HBL2

Thank you for the update and the model number of the cook top. The burner switches on this cook top I believe will rotate 360 but it should shut off the burner in the off position. If the other switch does not rotate 360 then the switch in question is bad. It also sounds like the switch has sticky internal contacts and will need to be replaced. The two switches on this model are different from each other. The left burner switch is part number: 3191049 and the right burner switch is:3191050. If you want to know how to replace the switch yourself please use the thread to communicate and I will give you some instructions. If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: [Sears Home Services | http://www.searshomeservices.com?sid=MMLxexpertxmerch] . Thank you for using Manage My Life.

Thank you for the update Diane. First _REMOVE POWER _ to the range. You will need to remove the cook top out of the counter. This will require that you go into the cabinet and release the retainer that hold the cook top onto the counter. Locate and remove the retainers that secure the glass to the burner box. Then remove the knob on the burner switch and remove the retainer nut that holds the switch to the glass. Then lift the glass and with the new switch replace wire for wire from the old switch locations to the replacement switch locations (this is very important that you replace the wires on the terminals exactly as on the old switch) and install the switch back onto the glass and re-assemble glass top retainers and install back into the counter. I hope this will help.
