Q:

How do you replace the door latch on the GE Spacemaker 1800 XL? JVM1340AW02 Ge Microwave

A:

I understand you are experiencing difficulties with your Microwave. Microwaves contain high voltage internal components that can retain a lethal electrical charge even when the microwave is completely unplugged. Door repairs and adjustments, even minor ones, can cause microwave leakage and a microwave shielding leakage test must be performed using a survey meter after any microwave service. This repair should be done only by a qualified service technician. I have provided a link To Sears Home Services if you decide to schedule service. It may be cost effective to just replace the unit, I have also provided a link to the Microwave section of Sears.com to price out what a replacement would cost.

Thank you for posting your question. This is a replaceable part but you will need to have a technician make this repair.

Microwaves are inherently dangerous to service. Internal capacitors can retain a lethal electrical charge even when the microwave is unplugged. A microwave radiation leakage test must be performed on the unit following any repair. I recommend calling a service technician to repair this type of problem.

To install a new door handle, the door will have to be removed from the microwave and taken apart. When this type repair is done there is a possibility of microwave leak around the door. A leak test should be performed on the microwave after the repair is made.

To replace the door handle remove the screws from either the upper or lower hinge and remove the door from the microwave.

Place the door face down on a flat surface on a pad. With a small flatblade screwdriver or a putty knife pry the inner trim off the door. Pry a small distance at a time and work your way around the door until the inner trim comes free.

With the trim removed you can access the screws that hold the handle on.
