Thank you for contacting SearsPartsDirect.com with your question about the igniters on your GE Gas Cooktop. I am so sorry to hear the igniters click randomly when the unit is off. I can understood your concern, especially when dealing with a gas appliance. There are a few different possible causes for the igniter clicking when the unit is turned off. I will be happy to help you with this.

Please note - If the igniters continue clicking long after they have ignited the gas, you may have a faulty ignition system. In this case I recommend you turn all the burners off, unplug the cooktop, turn off the gas supply to the unit and make a service appointment. To setup an appointment for a Sears technician you can call 1-800-469-4663 or go to www.SearsHomeServices.com.

Otherwise, it could be one of the following.

1. A malfunction in the switch mechanism or the igniters. The igniters may randomly click if the spark module or the igniter itself is malfunctioning. You can test the switch and the igniters with an OHM meter. The switch can become twisted or break in which case the spark module remains one. I have included the links to order the parts if necessary.

2. Dirt or grease build up. Over time, the electrode (a small metal piece by the burner that gives off a spark) may be dirty, or the holes in the burners may be clogged. You can clean the burner holes with a needle or paper clip. (Don't use something that can break off - like a toothpick.) If you are not able to remove the build up on the burner, replace the burner.

3.  Moisture. If you notice the intermittent clicking after cleaning the cooktop, you may have moisture on the switches or the ignition parts. Allow the parts to dry throughly. If, after the unit is dry, the clicking continues, have a technician look at it.

I hope this helps. If I can be of further assistance, please respond to this thread. Thank you for choosing Sears. We appreciate your business.

Check to make sure that the burner switches are all in the OFF position. When the igniters are ticking constantly even though the burners are all off, the failure is normally in a shorted burner switch. The wiring diagram for this cook top is shown in the image below. Instead of checking the continuity between the pins on the spark module, I recommend that you check the continuity through the burner switches (with the circuit breaker for the cook top shut off ). The burner switches should all be "open" (measure Ol -- open load or infinite resistance) with the burners off. If you find a bad switch, the entire switch/harness assembly (part WB18T10338) will need to be replaced. Here is a Sears PartsDirect.com link for that part: Switch Harness .

This information should help you fix the cook top. If you need more assistance, reply with additional details.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .
