Thank you for your question and I understand your concern.

The surface electrodes do not normally fail unless the ceramic base is cracked or broken. In order for the electrodes to spark between the electrode and the burner, the spark module must power up whenever any one of the surface burner switches rotated to the light position. There is a switch mounted on each one of the surface burner valves that completes a path of voltage to the spark module when rotated to light. When the spark module receives the 120 voltage supply, the electrodes begin sparking between the tip of the electrode and the burner which must have a good ground. Make sure the unit is grounded.

I added an image below with instructions and information. NOTE: Disconnect the power cord from the power source and shut the gas off before servicing the cook top.
