Thank you for your question and I understand your concern.

Electrodes do not normally fail unless the ceramic base is cracked which can cause it to ground out instead of jumping fire between the electrode and the burner base.

To access or remove the surface electrode will require hinging the top open. The electrode has clip under the top that must be removed before the electrode can be removed. Before the top can be hinged opened; the burners must be removed. I added an image below with the procedures. NOTE: Disconnect the power cord from the power source before servicing.
