yes it an hs80 the question is what is the small 1/8 ' X 3/4" cylinder that resides in series between the mechanical timer and the heating element inside of the white protective plactic tubing that encloses the wires inside the case. it seems to have leaked a plastic substance that is now hard. I thought it might be some kind of thermal protection. I realize parts are not available as such. The lady who owns this is in her 80's and would like to continue using it. If you have any helpful suggestions I would appreciate them. Thanks

Thank you for your question and I understand your concern.

It appears by the parts list that the component is part of the power cord. The component was most likely a thermal fuse which is not available as a separate part.  At Searspartsdirect.com, the parts image list 2 different power cords in which one of the two is no longer available. The type 1 and type 3 are no longer available. You can view parts for the Black and Decker Handy steamer model HS80 at Searspartsdirect.com.

I hope this is helpful. If I may be of further assistance as more details become available, please reply to this post.
