Q:

My LCD television screen went black, but the sound still works. What could be causing this?

A:

If the screen went black but is still lit then the main board or the T-Con board might be defective. I tend to not suspect the main board because the audio is working as well as the micro but the supply to the T-Con is routed through the main on the LVDS cable. It can be very tricky to determine where you are losing the display and a technician would use a visual inspection as well as tapping on safe spots to see if they can find the loss.

The more common cause is the loss of backlight. The power board generates the high voltage for the lamps on this model. If the main board does not send the backlight on command, the power board does not generate the high voltage needed to power the lamps, or one of the lamps is defective then the backlight will not come on. Again we know that a lot of the main board is working since you can get audio and turn the set on. A technician would look for a visual clue that a lamp is defective by seeing if the backlight comes on momentarily and if it does that a small section seems dimmer than the rest. If not then the power board would be a first guess.

This is not a consumer level repair. I would make the check of seeing if the backlight is coming on momentarily then shutting off because that is a common symptom of a bad panel. If not then call a technician to see if he can pinpoint it down to the faulty circuit. When ordering parts make sure the part site has picked it based on your model version number found on the side of the TV. This is important because different versions of the same model used different parts.

David -- My Samsung 50"HP-S5053 TV has a problem. Screen keeps going to 1/2 off. Bottom 1/2 turns black. TV is 6 years old, and all else works fine-- audio, full picture for several minutes then goes on and off being 1/2 screen. Can this be fixed with a part, or is the whole board out?

Thanks, anonymous, for your comment. Due to the economy, I don't really want to pay a few hundred dollars for a technician. The picture will be fine and full for a while, then sometimes, not all of the time, half the picture goes away. It often comes back. Anybody out there that can help would be most appreciated. I am pretty good mechanically and electronically, so pretty specific instructions and details on where to get a small part would be very helpful.

The black bar can be caused by the lower buffer board or the plasma panel itself. The buffer board might be available, but would depend on the service model number. If you could provide the service model, version and serial number off the back or side of the TV, I could look up some additional part information.

A:

The part number of the lower buffer board is BN96-03362A. If you decide to change the part out yourself, please use extreme caution. The TV needs to be unplugged for a while to allow the electric charge to dissipate. Even after the set is unplugged for a while it can still hold an electric charge.

Thanks, Dusty. As I have heard, this part may not be available. I see from the link that similar part available for $63.67. Do you approximate cost of the labor to do the installation? And, if we did replace the part, how long would you estimate it would last? (I am trying to make decisions about repairing vs purchasing new TV. I am of the old school to fix broken things, but also want to be intellligent regarding costs and life span!)

Prices can vary based on sipping charges as well as repair cost. I cannot confirm that the total price for the repair would be $367. Labor rates can vary depending on state and tax will also vary by state, county, and city. Also, if the buffer board is not the problem then the part needed would be the plasma panel.

I was watching my plasma 50" tv and lost my picture(black screen) had sound but no pic

A:

I love watching my television to relax and the last thing I would want is for there to be no picture. While you are waiting for an expert answer, I did come across a great link that will provide you with some great details about what may have caused your problem. I am also including a second link in where you can enter your model number and your owners manual will pop up. I hope my link is useful.

I believe your model is HP-S5053X. Plasma TVs have several parts inside that control the screen. Since your TV does come on and have audio then the main processing board and power supply should be in proper working order. There are 4 additional parts inside your TV that could cause this problem. This would require a technician to make some check inside to be able to determine the cause of the problem.

I would recommend to contact Sears for home service and you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .
