Question and Answers

Q:

Vacuum agitator brush wont turn. There is no problem with the suction at all there is no belt to fix and there doesn't seem to be anything hung in it.

A:

These are great cleaners. I own one and have had this problem before. Check page 21 and reset the agitator overload. If it still does not run, you might want to check the previous expert post below on how to access the brush area to look for an obstruction. I attached both these links below. Hope this helps get your vacuum cleaning again.

Thank you for your question.

Not having the roller brush running can be a concern.

You are right this model does not use a belt to drive the brush; it has a direct drive motor internal to the brush.

There are a few things we can check to see why it is not operating.

  • First check the reset button on the top of the base unit. It may have tripped. Push to reset.

Before disassemble please REMOVE POWER from the vacuum.

  • If that is set then we will need to remove the 10 screws at the bottom of the base by turning the unit over and locating and removing all ten screws and then lift off the base assembly.

I have sent some pictures that illustrate the diagnostic and disassemble procedures.

  • If you have a Volt/Ohm meter you can check for continuity resistance in the motor circuit.

  • Set your meter to the RX1 ohm scale and check the thermal overload which is the flat reed like piece on top of the motor. This motor runs on 170 volts DC.

  • Check the continuity across the motor brushes.

  • Check the continuity across the overload protector.

If all these checks are ok it will indicate that the PCB board that powers the brush motor is bad and it is located up in the dust box suction motor housing.

This is a difficult place to get to so I would suggest at this point you take the unit in to be serviced.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired by a Sears technician. Here is a link that will provide the nearest drop-off locations: [Sears Home Services | http://services.sears.com/shs/category/repair?sid=MMLxexpertxmerch

If you would like to continue with disassemble of this unit please use the link for further instructions.

I hope this will help.

Thank you Janet; for your question on the vacuum cleaner. If you have the exact same model then I would say if the suction motor is not working you may have a problem with the motor control board. Please send me your model number information and a little more detail on your specific model. Sam A.

Thank you for the model number for the upright vacuum cleaner. If the suction motor is running then I would suggest removing the hose from the connector pipe down by the nozzle and make the hose and the pipe that gets the dirt from the roller brush are clear. If the motor is not running there could be a couple of reasons. The switch on the handle could be bad and need replacing, or the motor controller circuit board may have failed or the thermal fuse in line with the motor may have opened and last is if the motor burned out. Please tell me if the motor is running and you have no suction or if the suction motor is not running. If you select the bare floor mode it will turn the roller brush motor off and the suction motor should be the only motor on. Please let me know what you find out and we can continue to troubleshoot. Sam A.

Hello, The agitator on our model 11625615500 is jammed. On of the end caps on the agitator itself will not rotate. Is there a way to remove this part or will I have to replace the whole agitator assembly?

Hi Justin and Greg, sorry no one has responded to your questions.

Greg, on your model I'm showing the end caps only come with a new agitator assembly. The end caps are not sold separately. Here is the link to PartsDirect for the complete agitator.

Agitator Assembly for Model 116.55615500

Justin, I recommend taking the agitator off and trying to turn the motor shaft by hand. If you have trouble turning it by hand then the problem may be with the motor. The motor is a non-serviciable part, you will need to replace it. If the shaft turns fine the check the two end caps on the agitator to make sure they are turning okay.
