I'm surprised taking apart the spray arms solved the not draining problem.

On this particular dishwasher the motor reverses direction to drain. It runs one direction to circulate the water to wash and then it reverses direction to drain.

There may be something around the impeller causing the noise and I'd suggest you first try getting into the sump and check the filters and check if something is wrapped around the impeller. The images below will help you with this.

This would be a good start to resolving this problem. You can reply with any additional details or questions for further assistance.

Q:

Why won't my Whirlpool dishwasher model GU980SCGQ3 drain completely?

A:

This dishwasher uses the same pump to spray and to drain. The pump turns in one direction to spray and the opposite direction to pump. If the water is spraying properly, then it is not very likely that you have a pump motor problem if the pump is apparently running the same in the opposite direction. A common problem in this type of dishwasher is a clogged check valve. The following link of a previous answer provides more information on this type problem: What is causing my dishwasher to drain slowly?

If you find no apparent problem in the check valve, then you could have a clogged or restricted drain hose.

If the above tips do not help you resolve this problem, I recommend calling a service technician to diagnose and repair the dishwasher.
