From the description you give you are referring to the spring that attaches to the lever.

The images below are from the technical information that was available at the time.

Look for the post near the edge of the console. Sometimes the plastic post broke and not the spring.

If the post is there then one end of the spring slips over the post and the other end attaches to the lever.

If the post is not there then there may be enough plastic to get a small screw into. The spring can be mounted to the screw.

Thanks, Fred. It must be a broken/missing plastic post, as I could not see anything for the spring to attach to and assume the proper direction to attach the spring is key to the proper tention and angle for the lever to work on the elongated hole in the lever. With your posted tech manual picture I should be able to locate the broken post base and tap-in a small screw to anchor the loose end of the spring to. Thanks again!
