Thank you for your question and I understand your concern.

If you did not remove any parts other than the pump and motor assembly then no, it should not leak water when running water into the intake area of the pump. If it's leaking water then it will likely need a new impeller assembly with seal installed.

Make sure that the drain solenoid is not stuck in the drain position or the water will be pump out through the drain hose rather that up into the spray arm. The plunger inside the drain solenoid should only be pulled down when voltage is supplied to the solenoid. You should be able to manually pull push the plunger down and it should spring back up when released.
