Question and Answers

Why is my GE dishwasher not filling with water?

From what you are describing it sounds like either the float assembly or water valve is malfunctioning.

You should be able to check the float yourself. With the door open you will see the float on the left hand side. This is the device that prevents the dishwasher from overfilling with water, just in case the drain pump fails or the timer is advanced to another fill cycle after the unit has already filled.

You will need to remove the single screw that holds the float cover in position & remove the cover. You should now be able to check that the float moves freely up & down. It usually will only move about a half inch in either direction. Be sure not to pull up on the float too hard. You should also be able to hear the click of the float switch which is right below the float. The float should be in the down position for proper operation.

The water valve is located behind the lower inspection panel on the left hand side. I do not recommend you removing this panel. With the timer set to the beginning of a cycle you should be able to hear the hum or buzz from the water valve. Be sure the water supply to the dishwasher is turned on under the sink.

If your dishwasher is still not filling after making these checks I would recommend calling a service technician to diagnose & repair.
