Question and Answers

Q:

poor cooling both freezer/ref. GS6SHEXML00 Whirlpool Side-by-side refrigerator

A:

Thank You for choosing Sears PartsDirect.com. I regret to hear that you are having issues with your fridge and do understand your frustration. Glad to help out. Im looking at your model number GS6SHEXML00 and this could indicate an automatic defrost system/ bimetal defrost problem. If you see excessive frost in this area, you may be able to unplug the refrigerator, pull off the back wall of the freezer and carefully defrost the evaporator coils using a hot air gun or hair dryer on a low setting. This may restore cooling to your refrigerator. If the compressor is not running, it could be a problem with the starting device, the compressor itself or if the condenser motor is not running. A meter will be required to check the compressor and start device. If the lights on the board are not working properly I recommend replacing and start your troubleshooting once that is replaced; I hope this information helps with your troubleshooting. If you have further questions please resubmit your question for further information.

Thank you for choosing Sears PartsDirect.com.

Q:

my fridge model number gs6shexml00 on the ice maker it over fills with water on the inlet side then freases up then stop making ice what part do you think i gs6shexml00

A:

Before replacing any parts, I recommend that you attempt to adjust the water fill level on the icemaker. Here is a link for a previous answer that describes that process: http://www.managemylife.com/mmh/questions/116179-water-level-adjustment-device-whirlpool-side-side-ice-maker . You may need to remove the cover on the front of the icemaker to access that adjustment screw.

Unplug the refrigerator before removing that cover or accessing other internal components.

If that does not help, then you may need to replace the ice maker module (part 2198597) or the water valve assembly (part 4389178).

If you need more help, reply with additional details and we will assist you further.

Q:

Freezer Frosting & Refrigerator side not cooling GS6SHEXML00 Whirlpool Side-by-side refrigerator

A:

Thanks for the information about your refrigerator model GS6SHEXML00; sorry you are having a problem I will be glad to assist you. The bi-metal will not have continuity unless it is very cold, normally below freezing temperature. The resistance of the defrost heater is 27-21 ohms.  Basically it should either show open circuit if bad and closed if good.Based on what you have already replace the problem will be the heater or wiring that is if the freezer coil is getting cold enough to make the bimetal. If you need parts here is a link to Sears Parts Direct. I hope this helps, if you need more help reply with added details and I will be happy to respond. If you get to the point where you need to have a service technician diagnose and repair this failure, you can schedule service through this link: Sears Home Services.Ron H.
