Question and Answers

Q:

"ICE MAKER KEEP MAKING ICE WHEN FULL Model #GS6SHAXKT01 Whirlpool Side-by-side refrigerator"

A:

Thank you for contacting ManageMyLife.com. It may be the water valve if it continues to fill, voltage must be getting supplied to it all the time. This would indicate a stuck contact in the icemaker module. A good check for this is, with the water running, disconnect the icemaker wire harness connection. Be careful the wires will be hot (live). If the water stops, replace the icemaker. If water continues to flow it will indicate the water valve is stuck or there is a short in the wiring to the valve and needs to be replaced. If you are more comfortable with a  technician (click here).

A:

Thank you for choosing Sears Parts Direct. I can certainly understand how frustrating it can be when needing a part for your ice maker. I did look into your model number and I have found the ice maker diagram. I have found the ice maker module as well as the motor. It would depend on which part you would need. You can always view the diagram on searspartsdirect.com when you are ready. I have also found a video where you are able to test the ice maker to see what part could have gone bad. I know that it can be very difficult to have issues with your refrigerator. During the defrost cycle, water can overflow drain tube, backing up water into freezer. As a result you will have ice building up. Usually this problem can be corrected by performing a manual defrost cycle. I am including the instructions for manual defrost below.

Manual Defrost:

  1. Unplug refrigerator or turn off circuit breaker for 24 hours.
  2. Leave both doors open.
  3. Place towels at bottom of refrigerator to absorb excessive water.
  4. Turn power back on, allow refrigerator to stabilize temperature before loading with food.

If this does not help with the ice buildup or the leak, then try clean the drain in the refrigerator. To clean the drain hole in the freezer, the back panel in the freezer will need to be removed. With the panel removed, you will see the evaporator and directly under the evaporator will be the drain trough (tray). It will be full of ice that will have to be removed. You can use hot water and a small screwdriver to free and remove the ice. Be very careful not to puncture a hole in the evaporator. When the ice is removed you will see the drain hole in the trough. Use hot water to clean the drain hole. This can take awhile depending on how far down the ice goes. You will need to keep wiping the excess water and pouring fresh hot water into the drain hole, until it runs free to the bottom drain pan. If this is a recurring problem, there is a heat probe # 819043 that can be installed, to help stop this from happening. The heat probe is available at Sears Parts Direct . It will come with instructions. If you don't feel comfortable doing this yourself, just click on this link to schedule service: Sears Home Services . I hope this helps. If you need further assistance, please reply to this thread. Thank you for using Manage My Life.
