The oven/range combo is a Whirlpool Super Capacity 465 (gas model). The official model no. is GS395LEHS 5. The unit is about 8 years old but was unused for the first 5 years as our home was an unoccupied model until we purchased about 3 years ago. The cooktop range works fine without any problems. The problem is the oven only works when it wants to (like when we are planning a nice dinner). To operate the oven you push the bake button, set the desired temperature, then press start/enter. You then hear a "click" and the burner lights (or doesn't). It works about 75% of the time. Sometimes it comes on as normal but goes off during operation then won't come back on. Any help you can offer will be appreciated.

Thanks for providing the model number and those additional details.

The oven on this range uses a direct spark ignition system. That system is complicated and difficult to diagnose (especially for an intermittent problem). Here is a link for a previous answer that describes the technical troubleshooting for that system: Where can I find specific procedures for checking the control board functions on my Whirlpool gas range model TGS325MQ4? . You could have a problem with the gas valve or a problem with grounding that is causing this failure.

You could have a spill or obstruction around the burner that is restricting gas flow around the spark igniter on the oven burner. You can unplug the range and check that issue. There is a chance that you may need to replace the oven burner and igniter.

If you determine the parts needed, you can order those parts from the Sears PartsDirect website.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services . NOTE: It may be difficult for a technician to diagnose and repair an intermittent problem on this system.
