Question and Answers

Q:

Why won't my Whirlpool gas dryer keep running after it gets hot?

A:

Your symptoms point to a friction problem with the drum when the dryer gets hot. When the dryer is cold, check the resistance to the rotation of the drum in the counterclockwise direction. When the dryer stops running and will not restart without help, try rotating the drum with the dryer off to see if it has more resistance. If it does, then you will need to determine the cause for the increase in resistance of the drum.

Other causes of this problem could include:

  • A failed drive motor even though you just replaced it.
  • A drop in voltage through the dryer outlet.
The wiring diagram for your dryer is shown in the image below. This diagram shows that there are no thermostats or controls in the drive motor circuit that would prevent the motor from running when the dryer heats up.
