Question and Answers

Q:

pull rope won't retract, how do I repair?? 917378550 Craftsman Gas, walk behind lawnmower

A:

Thank you for contacting SearsPartsDirect.com with your question about your Craftsman walk behind lawn mower model 917378550. I am so sorry the rewind starter rope will not retract. I will be happy to help you with this.

Your mower has a Honda engine model GCV160A-S3A. Based on the information you provided, it sounds like an internal part of the rewind starter has broken. Unless you have experience reassembling a rewind starter, it is better to go with a new one. The spring inside the starter is hard to re-install and can cause serious injuries. For this reason, several manufacturers do not provided repair parts for the starters. This is the case with you Honda engine, you will need to replace the rewind starter assembly. I have included the blue link below for you to order the rewind starter.

I hope this answers your question. If you need further assistance, please resubmit your question with additional details. Thank you for choosing Sears, we appreciate your business.

Q:

starting problem Craftsman Gas, walk behind lawnmower

A:

Hello glad to help.  Thank You for choosing Sears PartsDirect.com

I am sorry and do understand your frustration when there is trouble with the lawnmower.

Glad to help out.   Im  looking at your Craftsman Lawnmower model number 917.378960.   With that model number I am bringing up your engine Honda model GCV160-AS3A.

Sounds like  you have a dirty fuel jet in the carburetor.   You can try taking it apart and cleaning it.  However, the cost of the carburetor is very cheap and would just order a new one.
When is the last time you put in a new air filter and spark plug to tune it up and keep it running well?   Would be wise to get all three in one order to help your lawnmower out.

Carubretor for model GCV160A-S3A

Air filter for model GCV160A-S3A

Spark Plug for model GCV160A-S3A

Please "RESUBMIT YOUR QUESTIONS IF THERE IS ANY OTHER PROBLEMS".

Thank you for your understanding in this matter and I hope we can help you with your future questions and repairs.  Thank you for choosing Sears and using our SearsPartsDirect.com.

I know that it can be very difficult to have issues with your lawn mower maintenance. I was able to locate a set of instructions that will help you change the spark plug. Just click on this link to view them: Lawn Mower Maintenance Make sure that the engine is cool before replacing the spark plug. Remove the spark plug wire and then remove the spark plug as shown in the image below. Set the gap on the new plug at .030" with a gauge (see image). Install the new plug. The torque specification for the spark plug is 180 in. lbs. If you have a torque wrench, you can tighten it to this specification. If you need further assistance, please reply to this thread. Thank you for using Manage My Life.
